First Flight: What to Expect?
If you have ever wanted to fly, now is the time to try. Experience breathtaking scenes flying over the beautiful beaches of SWFL. A typical first flight lesson includes:
- Ground school before the flight cover:
- Basic principles of what makes an airplane fly
- Preflight preparations
- Flight Instrumentation, so you know what you are looking at
- Approximately one hour of actual flying where YOU WILL BE THE PILOT
- Your own log book with flying credit towards your Private Pilot’s License
- Detailed information on what is required to obtain a PPL
When do I actually start flying the airplane?
Immediately. After completing about one hour of ground instruction before your introductory flight or first lesson, you will actually understand the basics of flight and be able to fly the aircraft. Naturally, you will be assisted by the flight instructor, but you will be amazed at how much you can do on your own.
Is it difficult to get a physical for flying?
Not at all, there are several doctors in your area that are able to give you a simple 3rd Class FAA exam which usually takes no more than 15 minutes. No blood work or special tests are required. Even if you wear glasses or have hearing aids you won’t have a problem. A list of doctors in your area is available at FAA.gov
What is the minimum age to start taking flying lessons?
Actually, you can take flying lessons at any age with a flight instructor. However, in order to fly solo, you must be 16 years old and 17 to obtain your private pilot’s certificate (PPL)
What does having my Private Pilot’s License allow me to do?
Once you obtain your license, you can then bring your friends along and even share the cost of the airplane. You will be able to fly under VFR conditions anywhere you want to go without having to be signed off by an instructor.
How long will it take to earn a private pilot license?
This will depend on how much you can fly. If you can fly twice a week, which would amount to about 4 hours, you see it can be done in as little as three months. However for most people this isn’t practical so you can make your own schedule and do it at your own pace.
Do I have to put money down before I start?
No, you pay as you go.
